Faster Mesothelioma Diagnosis and Treatment

New Study Could Help Make Mesothelioma Diagnosis and Treatment Much Faster; Baron and Budd Applauds Advancement, Hopes Study Can Help Patients Differentiation Between Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma and Non-Cancerous Conditions Can Help Enhance Chances for Survival DALLAS – July 02 – The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics has published a study that could be a significant help in correctly diagnosing malignant pleural mesothelioma. The disease can be extremely difficult to distinguish from reactive mesothelial proliferations, a common issue that is non-cancerous. By being able to accurately differentiate between the two conditions earlier, treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma can take place much faster. The law firm is Baron and Budd is happy to applaud this progress is mesothelioma, a cancer that generally gets little attention. (Science Codex, June 6, 2014; http://www.sciencecodex.com/biomarkers_accurately_distinguish_mesothelioma_from_noncancerous_tissue-135150) Mesothelioma, a disease that primarily results from exposure to asbestos, can be extremely difficult to diagnose accurately. The main reason is that its symptoms often mimic those of other illnesses. The goal of the study, which is headed by Eric Santoni-Rugju, MD, PhD, is to identify microRNAs – non-coding strands of RNA – that can help differentiate between malignant pleural mesothelioma from reactive mesothelial proliferations. MicroRNAs are used to diagnose and predict the behavior of other forms of cancers. The scientists involved in the study, which took place at the Copenhagen University Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, used four biomarkers that can help increase the accuracy of mesothelioma diagnoses. By using microRNA strands, the accuracy of classifying tissue as malignant pleural mesothelioma or reactive mesothelial proliferations has been as high as 94 percent. “This is obviously not just excellent news – it could potentially serve as a turning point in the successful treatment of this devastating disease,” said Russell Budd, managing director of mesothelioma law firm Baron & Budd. “The strides being made by this research team could eventually bring hope to countless mesothelioma patients.” The national law firm of Baron and Budd has helped mesothelioma patients and their families for more than 35 years. Street Reopens after Asbestos Concerns

St. Louis – Crews have removed asbestos off a downtown block, according to city officials. The Lucas Avenue and 11th Street (North) sections, which had been closed following a steam pipe break released asbestos fibers into the air, were reopened following health director Pam Walker said the test results confirmed there were no dangerous levels of asbestos. The pipe ruptured last week sent a steam cloud above downtown streets, carrying fibers from asbestos insulation with it. The city shut the streets and started swabbing surfaces for asbestos fibers. Results of surface test indicated the presence of asbestos all through the one-block portion southwest of the pipe rupture. However, air monitors have not discovered airborne asbestos fibers, according to Walker. The north of Lucas Avenue will remain closed until the ruptured pipe is repaired. According to officials, it may take up to 10 days.

Antimetabolite Chemotherapy with Gemcitabine

Research Finds Survival Benefit in Second Line Chemotherapy, Reports Surviving Mesothelioma There is new evidence that second-line chemotherapy with a drug called gemcitabine can significantly prolong survival in people with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Raleigh, NC – June 30 – A new study out of Turkey finds that mesothelioma patients who have second-line chemotherapy with the antimetabolite, gemcitabine (Gemzar) had a median survival rate 8 months longer than those who had only first-line chemotherapy. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted a report on the new findings. Click here to read it now. Researchers at Acibadem Kayseri Hospital in Kayseri, Turkey examined the records of 73 mesothelioma patients from four different Turkish institutions. Those who had second-line gemcitabine-based chemotherapy were significantly more likely to still be living 36 months after treatment. “According to our results, we may consider gemcitabine-based regimens as a secon d-line chemotherapy after treatment with pemetrexed plus platinum in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma,” writes lead researcher Dr. Hasan Mutlu, a medical oncologist with Acibadem Kayseri Hospital. The new report, published in Medical Oncology, focuses on gemcitabine because of its ability to stop DNA and RNA production in cancer cells. It is used to treat pancreatic, breast, lung, and several other cancers. “This study should offer some encouragement to patients whose mesothelioma has come back after chemotherapy that there is another, viable treatment option to try,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma. To learn more about the Turkish study and survival results for mesothelioma patients on second-line gemcitabine, see Overall Survival “Significantly Higher” After Second-Line Chemotherapy, now available on the Surviving Mesothelioma website. Mutlu, H et al, “Second-line gemcitabine-based chemotherapy regimens improve overall 3 -year survival rate in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma: a multicenter retrospective study”, August 3, 201, Medical Oncology, Epub ahead of print, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24958517. Asbestos Lawsuit against Building Owners By City

City Files Lawsuit against Building Owners over Asbestos Debris City authorities are trying to remove the asbestos-contaminated waste of 135 E. Main St. at the earliest after the Marshalltown grocery store burned in February. The city council had approved filing a asbestos lawsuit against F&H Properties Corp., the building owners, to force the cleanup. City lawyer Curt Ward said the city has filed a complaint claiming that the debris is a problem. The lawsuit will allow the court to seize the funds for the cleanup from F&H and hand over it to the city. F&H, which is owned by Ed Hughes and Charles Fairall, has 20 days for filing documentation. “The issue should stay in property owners’ hands. It should not be shif ted to the citizens,” Ward said.

Home Demolition Halted after Asbestos Discovery

The demolition of a River Avenue home has been halted due to the discovery of asbestos. The MIOSHA (Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration) office ceased the project at because the demolition contractor hired by home owner Bank of America doesn’t have license to deal with asbestos. Mike Mason, the Asbestos Program Manager with MIOSHA, said the demolition company was advised regarding the hazards of asbestos. Mason said only accredited contractors will be allowed to remove asbestos. He said Bank of America must hire an authorized asbestos abatement contractor to evaluate the condition of asbestos and proceed further. “There is no deadline. But Bank of America will have to do it appropriately,” Mason said.
